Oneonta State senior Kacy Boburka had 18 kills and eight digs Saturday as the Red Dragons earned a key 25-17, 24-26, 25-21, 25-19 volleyball victory over Potsdam in a SUNY Athletic Conference East Division Tournament match at New Paltz.
O-State (18-12) and Potsdam finished with 3-5 SUNYAC records and will oppose one another in a play-in match to qualify for the conference tournament at noon Nov. 2 at Buffalo State.
O-State and Potsdam each lost their second matches Saturday, with the Red Dragons falling, 25-23, 25-22, 27-25, to Plattsburgh.
Against Potsdam, Erica Darpino had 14 kills and senior Brittany Calvello earned her sixth triple-double of the season, amassing 10 kills, 21 assists and 15 digs.
In the loss to Plattsburgh, Boburka had 12 kills and 10 digs. Calvello contributed 17 assists, five aces, five blocks and 16 digs, and junior Kristina Pelaccio finished with 19 digs.
O-State will host Hartwick at 7 p.m. Thursday in the Presidential Match.
Empire 8 Tournament
Hartwick went 2-1 in Empire 8 competition Saturday and Sunday at Utica College.
On Sunday, the Hawks beat Nazareth, 19-25, 25-20, 25-16, 16-25, 15-12. It marked Hartwick’s first win over Nazareth since 1997.
Dana Martin had 22 kills and Hannah Strom finished with 20. Britney Lintner and Shannon McGee had 37 and 13 assists, respectively, and Brianna Eckert contributed 17 digs.
To qualify for the Empire 8 playoffs for the first time in program history, Hartwick (11-15, 3-4) needed to follow with a victory over St. John Fisher. But the Hawks fell, 25-17, 20-25, 16-25, 25-16, 16-14.
Strom had 14 kills and 11 digs. Martin finished with 16 kills and eight digs, Eckert had 24 digs, Lintner contributed 35 assists and Christina Vitale had 12 digs.
Hartwick opened the tournament Saturday with a 25-17, 25-13, 26-24 win over Utica.
Martin and Strom had 11 and 10 kills, respectively, and Lintner contributed 27 assists.
SUNY Cobleskill defeated Penn State Harrisburg, 25-22, 25-15, 25-18, and lost to Penn State Abington, 25-15, 26-24, 15-25, 25-23, and Gallaudet, 25-11, 25-7, 25-17, in a North Eastern Athletic Conference crossover weekend at Abington on Saturday and Sunday.
