Local schedule washed away

Don’t mess with Sandy.

Today’s local sports schedule is a wash thanks to Hurricane Sandy, whose high winds and rains touched the area early Monday morning and have stuck around since.

As a result, the Section Four Class D Girls Soccer Tournament semifinals were pushed back to Wednesday, creating a quadruple-header at the Wright National Soccer Campus in Oneonta.

Franklin’s girls will play Marathon at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, followed by the girls from Morris and Downsville at 3 p.m. Marathon won the Interscholastic Athletic Conference championship. Morris and Downsville were co-champions in the Tri-Valley and Delaware leagues, respectively.

The Class D boys semifinals feature Delaware League co-champion Margaretville against Elmira Notre Dame at 3 p.m. Wednesday, followed by defending Section Four Class D champion Cherry Valley-Springfield against Marathon at 3:30 p.m.

In Class C field hockey, Sidney’s Section Four semifinal against Marathon was moved from Monday to 6 p.m. Wednesday at Cortland State. Sidney beat Marathon in the Section Four Class C championship match last season.

Sidney’s volleyball team had a Class C sectional opener against Watkins Glen set for Tuesday, but that match will be played Wednesday at a time to be announced. The two are tentatively scheduled to play at Waverly, which will host the winner in a sectional quarterfinal at 6 p.m. Wednesday.

Bainbridge-Guilford’s Class D volleyball quarterfinal at Tioga moved from today to 6 p.m. Wednesday at the same site.

Cooperstown’s boys were slated to play Manlius Pebble-Hill in a Section Three Class C soccer semifinal today, but that game is now part of a Friday night doubleheader at Morrisville State. The Redskins and M-PH will open at 6 p.m., followed by Mount Markham against Fabius-Pompey at 8 p.m. Semifinal winners will play for the sectional title Saturday at a time and site to be determined.

Also Monday, Section Four announced the Class B and Class C girls soccer finals will be played Friday at Greene. Midstate Athletic Conference champion Unatego will meet Elmira Notre Dame at 4:30 p.m. Friday, with Southern Tier Athletic Conference champion Oneonta High to follow against Seton Catholic Central at 7 p.m.

The hurricane also forced local colleges to reschedule events this week.

Hartwick moved its men’s soccer match against Buffalo from tonight to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Elmore Field.

Wednesday’s SUNY Athletic Conference Tournament semifinal doubleheader at Oneonta State has been split up as well. The Red Dragons women will play Fredonia at 1:30 p.m. Friday at Roberts Wesleyan, which will host the championship at 1 p.m. Saturday.

Also at 1:30 p.m. Friday, O-State’s men will play New Paltz at Plattsburgh. Oneonta is the defending SUNYAC Tournament champion and reached the NCAA Division III semifinals last season.
