Princess Joefield and Quashanda Barnes had respective second- and fifth-place finishes in the New York State College Track Conference’s heptathlon held Sunday and Monday at Ithaca College.
Joefield, a freshman, finished with 4,096 points. She had the best performances in the shot put (11.09 meters) and the 200 meters (26.45).
Barnes, a sophomore, won the 800 in 2:26.81 en route to 3,636 points.
The remainder of the NYSCTC meet will be held Friday and Saturday at St. Lawrence University.
SOFTBALLCobleskill to play Friday
Third-seeded SUNY Cobleskill will open play in the North Eastern Athletic Conference tournament at 4 p.m. Friday against No. 2 seed Wilson College at Penn State Berks.
The Fighting Tigers went a program-best 18-16 this season, including a 12-8 mark in the NEAC. Wilson (13-15) finished 13-7 in conference.
The double-elimination tournament features the top three teams from the NEAC’s North and South divisions, including South Division top seed and tournament host Berks (33-3, 19-1). The winner of Friday’s Cobleskill-Wilson game will play the North Division’s top-seed, Keuka College (15-9), whose roster includes Sidney graduate Danielle Gravel (8-4, 2.16 ERA). That game is scheduled for 10 a.m. Saturday. The Coblekill-Wilson loser will play an elimination game at noon Saturday against SUNYIT or Penn State Abington.
The tournament will conclude Sunday, with the winner an automatic berth into the NCAA Division III tournament.
The NEAC named Cobleskill freshman Erin Wadsworth its pitcher of the week.
In five appearances last week, Wadsworth had a 3-2 record with a 0.68 ERA. Wadsworth struck out 46 in 41 innings and helped the Fighting Tigers to their first NEAC tournament appearance.
Wadsworth struck out 13 in a 4-2 win over Morrisville on Thursday. On Saturday, she struck out in Cobleskill’s 2-1 win over Keuka. The following day, she threw five innings in a 1-0 win over Wells College.
Overall, Wadsworth is 10-6 with a 3.14 ERA, with a NEAC-leading 151 strikeouts.
SUNY Delhi lacrosse
Dan Badolato and Sean Gilbane of SUNY Delhi earned First Team all-Region III honors in men’s lacrosse, and Bob Leary was named the Mountain Valley Conference Coach of the Year.
Badolato and Gilbane helped the Broncos to a 12-4 record, the best mark in program history.
Delhi’s David Fernandes was named a Second Team all-region player.
Leary, in his 10th season, earned MVC Coach of the Year honors for the sixth time. He’s also the reigning MVC women’s soccer Coach of the Year.
Gilbane and Jake Guy also were named the Region III tournament all-star team.
Cobleskill athlete of the week
Freshman Rob Neubert of the men’s lacrosse team was named SUNY Cobleskill’s athlete of the week.
Neubert had two goals, six assists and scooped three groundballs in Cobleskill’s 14-9 win over Wells College in the Fighting Tigers’ season-finale.
For the season, Neubert led Cobleskill in goals (20) and assists (32). He also had 34 groundballs.
Cobleskill finished 3-8 overall and 1-7 in the NEAC.
