---- — STAFF REPORT

Oneonta High rallied for six runs in the top of the seventh inning to beat host Johnson City, 11-6, Monday in a Southern Tier Athletic Conference baseball game.

With the score tied at 5, Matt Bitzer opened the Yellowjackets’ seventh with a walk against losing pitcher Henry Pellicciotti. Noah Sheehan then reached on a bunt single and Collin Neer walked to load the bases. After a strikeout, Conor Tavarone lined an RBI single to left-center to make it 6-5.

Josh Garufi then capped his three-hit day with a two-run single to center. Jon Vega followed with an RBI single and Chris Pindar hit an RBI double.

“It was good hitting on our part,” OHS coach Joe Hughes said. “We knocked out 14 hits. We had tough two-out base hits and we battled with two strikes.”

OHS led, 4-0, before the Wildcats scored five times in the bottom of the fifth off of winning pitcher Kragh Delello. All three of Delello’s walks came in that inning and all three of them came around to score as JC took a 5-4 lead.

The Yellowjackets (8-3, 6-3) tied the score at 5 in the sixth inning. Tavarone walked, went to second on a single by Garufi and scored on a two-out single by Zach King.

King also had three hits, and Pindar, Vega and Sheehan contributed two hits apiece for OHS, which has won three straight since a 12-5 loss to Chenango Valley on Wednesday.

Defensively, Hughes said Vega made a diving catch center in the first inning. OHS also turned double plays in the first and second innings.

“I like the way they play and I like the way we approach the game,” said Hughes, who graduated eight key players off of last year’s Class B state championship squad. “The sophomores are contributing and it’s a good team effort.”

The Yellowjackets will travel to Windsor on Wednesday.
