Cobleskill softball falls, 2-1, in NEAC opener

Staff Report

SUNY Cobleskill’s softball team dropped into the losers’ bracket in the North Eastern Athletic Conference Tournament after a 2-1 loss to Wilson College on Friday at Penn State Berks.

The Fighting Tigers (18-17) had the tying run at third base and the go-ahead run at second with one out in the seventh inning. Madeline DeMilio led off Cobleskill’s seventh with a single to center. She went to second on a sacrifice by Julia Lull. Kelsey DeZalia then reached on an error as DeMilio advanced to third.

After DeZalia stole second, winning pitcher Taylor Crouse struck out Mattea Bagley and induced Melissa Spears to ground out to second to end it. Crouse finished with eight strikeouts in a seven-hitter.

DeMilio went 3-for-4 and scored Cobleskill’s run. Lull finished 2-for-3.

Losing pitcher Erin Wadsworth struck out nine and walked three. She allowed one earned run.

Wilson (14-15) scored twice in the third inning, aided by a walk and an error.

Cobleskill’s run came in the fifth. DeMilio and Lull opened the inning with singles, the latter sending DeMilio to third. After a flyout, DeMilio scored on a groundout by Bagley.

The Fighting Tigers stranded 10 runners.

Cobleskill will play Penn State Abington at 2 p.m. Saturday in an elimination game.
