Mike Korchak struck out 15 and walked three in a three-hitter to lead visiting Seton Catholic Central to a 6-0 Southern Tier Athletic Conference baseball victory over Oneonta High on Monday.
Oneonta High (11-6, 9-6) made five errors, leading to five unearned runs by the Saints.
“He had a live fastball, probably mid-80s,” OHS coach Joe Hughes said of Korchak, who threw before scouts from Division I Siena and Bryant. “He didn’t show his curveball until the second time around. Then he started throwing more breaking balls just when I thought maybe we were getting some timing on his fastball.”
The Yellowjackets had three singles, one in the second inning by Zach King, another in the fifth by Matt Bitzer and the last in the sixth by Chris Pindar.
Left-hander Brock Eichler, a sophomore, struck out three and walked three over five innings. SCC scored three unearned runs off of Eichler in the first two innings. Neil McCormack hit an RBI double during the Saints’ two-run first inning.
“I’m getting tired of saying Brock Eichler is a tough-luck pitcher,” Hughes said. “He did what he needed to do to give us a chance. He doesn’t have the same velocity or curveball of Korchak yet, but he showed you don’t have to strike out 15 to be effective.”
Oneonta still has an outside shot of tying Chenango Valley for the East Division title. The Yellowjackets need to win at CV today and they need to the Warriors to lose their final two regular-season games against SCC and Chenango Forks to create a tie atop the division.
