Sidney’s Nick Meno advanced to the top two in Section Four Class C-D East singles play with a 7-6 (5), 6-2 victory over Seton Catholic Central’s Liam Fontaine on Thursday at Bainbridge-Guilford.
Meno went 3-0 during the first day of the tournament, following a 6-1, 6-3 second-round defeat of Greene’s Cameron Chase with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Roxbury’s Joe McAfee and the semifinal triumph over Fontaine.
Another SCC player, Michael Perry, reached the top two with a 6-0, 6-2 semifinal win over James Warner of Margaretville.
Meno and Perry advanced to a C-D crossover against the top two players from the West at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Binghamton Tennis Center. Should Meno win his first match, he will grab one of the two automatic-qualifier spots for the State Qualifiers next Friday and Saturday -- regardless of the outcome of his second match.
Should Meno lose his first match, he would have to win his second to have a shot at reaching the State Qualifiers. In the event that Meno places third, he would advance to a challenge match at 3 p.m. Wednesday at the BTC against a third-place finisher from Class A or Class B. The winner of that match would earn a berth to the State Qualifiers.
Meno, who was undefeated in the Midstate Athletic Conference, is 11-2 on the season.
Two area doubles tandems also reached the semifinals Thursday. Windham’s Eddie Moran and Joe Pelham fell, 6-0, 6-2, to Connor Moriarity and Brian Leone of Greene. Margaretville teammates Brandon Belaski and Yair Sanchez dropped a three-set semifinal to Seton’s Ricky Miller and Alex McCann, 6-7 (5), 6-1, 6-1.
