Water polo team home twice in '13

Staff Report

Three NCAA tournament teams highlight the 2013 Hartwick women’s water polo schedule, which was released Monday.

The Hawks, who ended 2012 ranked 18th in the country, are seeking their first CWPA Eastern title since 2007 under 10th-year coach Alan Huckins.

Hartwick, which graduated four players from last season’s team, opens Jan. 29 at Marist. The Hawks follow with a trip to the University of Pacific Invitational, where they’ll face the host Tigers, Cal State East Bay and Azusa Pacific. Hartwick, which has not played Azusa Pacific, is 6-0 against Pacific and 2-0 against CS East Bay.

The west-coast trip also includes a Feb. 7 match at San Diego State and the Feb. 9-10 UCSD Triton Invitational (opponents TBA).

The Hawks will then compete in the Feb. 16-17 Bucknell Invitational, which includes their CWPA Western divisional opener against Indiana. Hartwick also will play non-conference foes Brown and defending CWPA Eastern champion Princeton. The Tigers, who host Hartwick on March 8 as well, earned their first NCAA berth last season.

The Hawks also will compete in the Marist College Invite on March 2.

Hartwick’s home matches will take place on back-to-back weekends. Gannon, St. Francis, Siena and Marist will visit Moyer Pool on March 9. Salem, Connecticut College and Brown travel to Oneonta on March 16.

Hartwick’s schedule also features the March 23-25 Sun Devil Tournament in Arizona, where they’ll face 2012 NCAA tournament qualifiers Pomona-Pitzer and Stanford. The Hawks are 4-0 against Pomona-Pitzer and 0-3 versus defending national champion Stanford.

After playing at Siena on April 2, Hartwick closes its regular season at the April 5-7 Brown Invite. The postseason starts with the April 13-14 Western Divisionals at the Spire Aquatic Center in Ohio.

The Eastern Championships run April 26-28 in Ann Arbor, Mich.
