Hold off on the back cuts, cross-over dribbles and pull-up jumpers. Instead, grab the Scrabble, Monopoly or Risk games out of the hall closet.
Traditionally, the second day after Christmas is a big one for high school basketball tournaments, but they’ll have to wait a day this year.
A winter storm that was in full force Wednesday night forced the postponements of at least seven basketball tournaments that were to start today.
Oneonta High’s boys and girls team are among the many area teams affected.
OHS’ 2-5 boys squad was to play Oxford at 6 tonight in a first-round game of the Unadilla Valley Tournament. That game was moved to 6 p.m. Friday and will be followed by the host school facing Sherburne-Earlville at 7:45. The consolation and championship games will be played Saturday.
The Yellowjackets girls were to face fellow Section Four champion Owego at 7 tonight in a first-round game of the Pete Hyde Tournament at Johnson City Middle School. The same teams will meet at 7 p.m. Friday. Owego won the Section Four Class A title and OHS won its fifth straight sectional title and fourth consecutive Class B crown a season ago.
On Saturday, OHS (6-0) will play Class AA’s Vestal at noon.
One other boys tournament announced it was moving up a day _ the Greene Holiday Showcase. Unatego’s first-round game with Windsor will now be played at 5:15 p.m. Friday. The Spartans will then play the host school or Chenango Forks the following day in the championship or consolation game.
Also, Stamford’s non-league boys game at Walton was moved from today to 3:30 p.m. Friday.
Three other boys tournaments held out hope Wednesday that they could get their tournaments in as scheduled.
The Cherry Valley-Springfield Tournament, pitting Richfield Springs against Sharon Springs and CV-S versus Owen D. Young at 6 and 7:45 tonight, respectively, is still scheduled, as is Cooperstown’s Dick White Tournament, which includes Sidney and the host school. The Warriors will play Cobleskill-Richmondville at 4 p.m. today and the Redskins will oppose Fort Plain at 8 tonight in first-round games.
