Mark Viviano seems to be right at home in Oneonta.
Bainbridge-Guilford/Afton senior Viviano earned his second straight wrestling championship at the Oneonta Rotary-Ross Cordell Tournament on Saturday, winning the 195-pound final with a 5-2 decision over Burnt Hills’ Race Viedt.
One of five area champions during the 24th annual event, Viviano helped the Bears to a fourth-place finish with 151.5 team points. Jesse Griswold’s 12-3 major decision over Nolan Hale of Burnt Hills capped his unbeaten run at 132 pounds for B-G/A, which finished two points shy of sharing second place with Elmira and Saugerties.
Christian Gramuglia (99 pounds), Joe Butler (138) and Jack Hatton (170) won championships for Burnt Hills, which amassed 225.5 points to top the 16-team field.
Seventh-place Unatego (133.5 points) also crowned three champions as Codie Nichols, Kevin Thayer and Leland Slawson won consecutive title matches.
Nichols won the 145-pound final with a 12-0 major decision over James Longo, the only Oneonta High wrestler to reach the championship round.
Thayer followed with a 4-3 decision over Jake Ashcraft of Burnt Hills at 152 pounds, and Slawson ended the Spartans’ title run with a 6-3 decision over Sandy Creek’s Mason McNitt at 160.
Unatego also received a runner-up finish from Ryan Marszal, who was pinned in 3 minutes, 4 seconds by Hatton in the 170-pound championship match.
B-G/A’s Chris Cirigliano also advanced to the finals but suffered a loss in the 106-pound final via a 20-second pin by Sherburne-Earlville’s Hunter Owen.
Viviano and teammate Justin Cirigliano won titles during the 2012 Cordell Tournament, at 182 and 138 pounds, respectively. Justin Cirigliano advanced to the semifinal round at 138 pounds this season but was pinned by Butler in 4:27. Justin Cirigliano finished fourth in his weight class Saturday as he dropped a 4-1 decision to Owego’s Nate Bell in the consolation finals.
