Hall to announce results Wednesday
National Baseball Hall of Fame President Jeff Idelson will announce the results of the 70th Baseball Writers’ Association of America election live on MLB Network at 2 p.m. Wednesday.
The announcement will be simulcast on MLB.com and at the Hall’s website, www.baseballhall.org.
The 2013 BBWAA ballot features 24 new candidates and 13 returners. Those who appear on at least 75 percent of the BBWAA ballots cast will be enshrined into the Hall at 1:30 p.m. July 28 at the Clark Sports Center in Cooperstown. The Class of 2013 already features umpire Hank O’Day, former Yankees owner Jacob Ruppert and 19th century standout Deacon White, who were elected by the Pre-Integration Era Committee in December.
Barry Bonds, Roger Clemens and Sammy Sosa, whose careers were tainted by allegations of using performance-enhancing drugs, appeared on the BBWAA ballot for the first time in 2012. Other notable first-timers on the ballot are Craig Biggio, Mike Piazza, Curt Schilling and David Wells. The leading returning candidates are Jack Morris (66.7 percent of the votes last year), Jeff Bagwell (56.0) and Lee Smith (50.6).
to fight cancer
Afton Central School will host a Coaches vs. Cancer basketball event to benefit the American Cancer Society today.
The Crimson Knights will host a quadruple-header against Sidney beginning with junior varsity boys and girls games at 4:30 p.m. The varsity girls will meet at 6 p.m., followed by the varsity boys at 7:30 p.m.
Fans will receive cancer awareness stickers and pin-up cards for the Wall of Hope will be available for a $1 donation. The event also will feature 50/50 raffles and a half-court shooting contest.

Davenport alumni game Saturday
The Davenport National Honor Society will host its first alumni basketball game at 5 p.m. Saturday.
This is a first-come, first-play event as there is a limit to how many people can play. All Davenport alumni are eligible to play in the event, which is open to the public.
Those who are not playing are asked to bring canned foods or pay a fee for admission. All canned foods and fees will benefit a charity.

O-State Kids Day
is Jan. 19
Oneonta State will host its third annual Kids in Sports Day at 10 a.m. Jan. 19 at Alumni Field House.
The day will be split into two sessions with a break for lunch and conclude at 1:45 p.m. with a question-and-answer featuring Red Dragons student-athletes. Soccer, tennis, volleyball, lacrosse and field hockey are the featured sports this year.
The event is free for children ages 4-13. Pre-registration is strongly recommended. Children should wear appropriate athletic clothing, including sneakers, and bring a lunch and a drink.

O-State to host
rival Jan. 22
Oneonta State’s basketball teams will host SUNY Athletic Conference rival Cortland in the annual Battle of the Red Dragons on Jan. 22 at Alumni Field House.
O-State’s women will play Cortland at 6 p.m., followed by the men at 8 p.m.
Oneonta alumni are invited to a dinner buffet at 5 p.m. Cost is $12 per person before Jan. 15 and $14 thereafter. Registration is required.

O-State to host baseball clinics
Oneonta State will host two high school baseball clinics at Alumni Field House this winter.
The Red Dragons will hold a pitchers/catchers clinic Jan. 27 and a hitting/defense clinic Feb. 3. Registration for both runs from 11:15 a.m.-noon, followed by the clinic from noon-3 p.m.
Cost is $35 per camper for one clinic or $60 per camper for both. The clinics are designed for high school players who will graduate during the 2013-2016 time period.

Wrestling tickets on sale
Tickets are on sale for the 51st annual New York State Public High School Athletic Association Wrestling Tournament, which will run Feb. 22-23 at the Times Union Center in Albany.
Session 1 starts at 9:30 a.m. Feb. 22 with the Parade of Champions, followed by Division I and II preliminaries from 10 a.m.-2 p.m., quarterfinals from 2-4 p.m. and wrestlebacks from 4-8 p.m.
Session 2 features state semifinals and wrestlebacks from 10 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Feb. 23, followed by wrestlebacks and consolation semifinals from 12:30-2 p.m. and consolation finals from 2-3:30 p.m.
Session 3 highlights Division I and II state championship matches and begins at 6 p.m. Feb. 23.
One-session tickets cost $12 apiece. Three-session ticket packages cost $38 for premium seating and $33 without. All seating is general admission, except for premium seating for the finals. Premium seating will not be sold separately during the finals.

Youth soccer forms due March 1
Registration forms for the Oneonta Youth Soccer Association’s spring recreational program will be distributed through Oneonta elementary schools and are due March 1. Forms also are available at Latte Lounge on Main Street in Oneonta.

OBGC hosting winter lacrosse
The winter session of Lacrosse Oneonta runs Mondays through Jan. 21, 2013 at the Oneonta Boys and Girls Club.
Boys and girls in grades 3-7 will play from 6-7 p.m., followed by youths in grades 8-12 from 7-9 p.m.
There is no fee to participate, but players must be OBGC members. A small amount of equipment is available for beginners.

Golf continues through March
Colonial Ridge Golf in Laurens is accepting sign-ups for its winter simulator golf league.
Two-person teams compete weekly in a captain-and-mate format. Play runs through the week of March 25-29. Playing times are flexible as teams may on weekdays of their choice from week to week.
Weekly fees are $10 per person. A one-time fee of $20 per person is also required to pay for prize money (110-percent cash payout).

Rat Snake registration open
Registration is open for the 2013 Rat Snake, a triathlon held in honor of the late Dr. Ken Stalter.
The event, which is scheduled for May 18, will feature professional timing. The triathlon/team triathlon will begin at 7 a.m., followed by the trail run at 10 a.m. and the 3-kilometer jog/stroll at noon.
The triathlon and trail run will be limited to 100 participants. The team triathlon will be limited to 10 teams.
