Hall to announce results Wednesday
National Baseball Hall of Fame President Jeff Idelson will announce the results of the 70th Baseball Writers’ Association of America election live on MLB Network at 2 p.m. Wednesday.
The announcement will be simulcast on MLB.com and at the Hall’s website, www.baseballhall.org.
The 2013 BBWAA ballot features 24 new candidates and 13 returners. Those who appear on at least 75 percent of the BBWAA ballots cast will be enshrined into the Hall at 1:30 p.m. July 28 at the Clark Sports Center in Cooperstown. The Class of 2013 already features umpire Hank O’Day, former Yankees owner Jacob Ruppert and 19th century standout Deacon White, who were elected by the Pre-Integration Era Committee in December.
Barry Bonds, Roger Clemens and Sammy Sosa, whose careers were tainted by allegations of using performance-enhancing drugs, appeared on the BBWAA ballot for the first time in 2012. Other notable first-timers on the ballot are Craig Biggio, Mike Piazza, Curt Schilling and David Wells. The leading returning candidates are Jack Morris (66.7 percent of the votes last year), Jeff Bagwell (56.0) and Lee Smith (50.6).
