Unatego crowns four champions at Wickham Classic

The Spartans will compete next in the Section Four Duals on Friday and Saturday. Hamilton said the seedings were supposed to be set Sunday night. Higher seeds will host the first round Friday. Winners will advance to Saturday’s quarterfinals in the Elmira area, which also will host the semifinals and championships.

CNY Tournament

Bainbridge-Guilford/Afton teammates Jamie Griswold (152) and Mark Viviano (195) won titles at the Central New York Tournament Saturday at Vernon-Verona-Sherrill.

The Bears duo led B-G/A (99) to a sixth-place finish in the tournament, which was won by Camden (134). Cooperstown (46.5) placed 17th.

Griswold won a 4-3 decision over Gage Patry of Vestal in their final. He finished 4-0, winning his other three matches with first-round pins.

Viviano won his fourth tournament of the season. He also won titles at the Clyde Cole in Oxford, the Windsor Christmas Tournament and the Oneonta Rotary-Ross Cordell Tournament. He went 4-0 at the CNY, beating Jim Laurenzo of New Hartford, 4-2, in the final.

Four other area wrestlers had top-four finishes: B-G/A’s Jesse Griswold (132) placed second; teammate Tim Parsons (138) was third; and the Cooperstown tandem of Jacob Miller (145) and Mikey Boyle (120) finished third and fourth, respectively.

Jesse Griswold, who also won crowns at the Cordell and the Cole, lost his second match of the year. He was pinned by Mohawk’s John Mazza at 3:15.

Miller won his consolation match against Mohawk’s Tim Rathbun, 10-2.

Boyle lost to Windsor’s Nate Hayes, 2-1, in the consolations.

Laurens 50, Franklin 37

David Fraser scored a team-high 13 points and had 11 rebounds to lead Laurens to a home win Saturday in the Tri-Valley League.

The Leopards outscored the Purple Devils, 25-14, in the second half.

“In the second half, we went to a full-court press,” Laurens coach Andy Carr said. “We were able to get turnovers and make quick buckets.”
