Zach Mudge’s game-high 28 points included 7-for-8 accuracy from the free throw line in the fourth quarter as host Hunter-Tannersville defeated Margaretville, 44-35, in a matchup of Delaware League Upper Division boys basketball powers Tuesday.
Both teams came into the night with one league loss. The Wildcats avenged a 66-60 loss to the Blue Devils earlier in the season.
H-T (12-2, 9-1) led by eight entering the final quarter, but a three-pointer by Matt VanValkenburg cut Margaretville’s deficit to 35-33.
Wildcats coach Chris Glennon then said his team responded with a putback and then spread the floor thereafter. Margaretville was forced to foul Mudge, who put the game away at the free throw line.
After the teams played a 9-9 standoff in the second quarter, Mudge scored 11 points as H-T outscored the Blue Devils, 15-4, in the second quarter.
“He hit a couple of threes, but he was also driving to the hole,” Glennon said of Mudge.
Another key, Glennon said, was his team’s box-and-one defense on Kyle Short. In the earlier meeting, Short hit six three-pointers and finished with 23 points.
This time, with Jordan Radcliffe chasing, Short was held to three points.
“We were welcoming someone else beating us,” Glennon said.
VanValkenburg finished with 12 points for Margaretville (12-2, 8-2).
H-T will travel to Roxbury on Thursday.

Derek Beers had 12 points to lead Franklin (2-9, 1-9), which will travel to Morris on Friday.
