Cats edge Dragons for Preston title

Staff Report

Tournament MVP Sarah Haight scored nine points and Sam Maidens had a team-best 16, leading host Davenport to a 50-47 girls basketball victory over Schenevus in the championship game of the Ray Preston Tournament on Thursday.

Haight also had 11 rebounds and five assists for the Wildcats, who placed Maidens on the All-Tournament Team.

Jenna Lutz finished with nine points, eight rebounds and four steals for Davenport (13-2), which gave Preston his 617th career victory. Preston stands two wins shy of tying retired Red Hook coach John Kuhn for the most girls basketball victories in New York.

Lutz hit two foul shots with 6.9 seconds left for the final margin. Kassie Jeffers also came through late at the foul line, sinking both ends of a 1-and-1 opportunity with 27.3 seconds left to give Davenport a 48-47 lead.

“It’s a great win for us,” Preston said. “Schenevus is a great team.”

All-tournament picks Sierra Bentley and Sarah Mellor paced the Dragons, with 18 and 12 points, respectively. Ceara Marlow contributed a team-best nine rebounds for Scheenvus, which trailed at halftime, 30-23.

Upper Delaware Division champion Davenport hosts Delaware League rival Hunter-Tannersville at 6:30 p.m. Saturday, then closes its regular season Monday at Downsville.

Amanda Off scored a game-high 22 points to help Unadilla Valley advance to the Midstate Athletic Conference 1-4 Tournament championship game.

Teammates Taylor Davis and Jenn Elliot contributed eight and seven points, respectively, for the top-seeded Storm (14-1), who jumped to a 27-18 lead at halftime.

“We got to the line and made our foul shots,” said UV coach Brandi Backus, whose team made 17 of 21 attempts at the foul line.

Taylor Palmatier scored 12 points for fourth-seeded Bainbridge-Guilford, which received 10 points from Abbey Smith.

“She shot the lights out,” Backus said of Palmatier.

UV will face Unatego in the MAC 1-4 title game at 2 p.m. Feb. 16 at Oneonta State. Second-seeded Unatego (14-3) beat No. 3 Harpursville, 54-50, in Thursday’s other semifinal.
