Shaun Gillen and Chad Obzud won matches Thursday, but the Oneonta State wrestling team dropped a non-conference dual meet at 13th-ranked Ithaca College, 36-9.
Gillen’s 9-3 decision over Jake Buczewski at 165 pounds scored the first points for the Red Dragons (6-9), who fell into a 24-0 hole after the Bombers (7-4) won the first five bouts.
Obzud scored Oneonta’s final points with a pin of Ricky Dracup in 5 minutes, 45 seconds at 197 pounds.
The Red Dragons will compete in a quad meet at Williams College at 1 p.m. Sunday. Wesleyan University and Western New England University also will participate.
SD State 14, Hartwick 9
Hartwick scored first, but seventh-ranked host San Diego State rallied back for a victory that dropped the Hawks to 3-4 this season.
Sami Capparelli scored five goals for the Hawks, who received two from Jemma Dendy Young. Allison Kosich and Kylie Traube also scored for Hartwick, which gave up five goals to Anique Herman of the Aztecs (6-1).
The Hawks face Cal State Northridge at the UC San Diego Triton Invitational on Saturday.
O-State coach selected
Oneonta State tennis coach Lon Mitchel will serve as the assistant coach of Team USA during the 19th Maccabiah Games, a two-week competition in Israel scheduled for July 17-30.
Mitchel will be involved in the Tennis Grand Masters Division during the Games, which are the world’s largest Jewish athletic competition. Only the Olympics and the Pan Am Games rank ahead of the Maccabiah Games in terms of the number of athletes who compete.
“In the world, there is such a small percentage of American coaches who get to represent the USA on any level,” said Mitchel, who is in his second year of coaching the men’s and women’s programs at Oneonta. “To be appointed in this role representing your background, heritage and the United States working with talented athletes from all over the USA and the world is like a dream come true.”
