Crappie Derby canceled
The Broome County Department of Parks and Recreation and the Whitney Point Sportsmen’s Association announced Thursday that the NYS Crappie Derby has been canceled because the ice on Whitney Point Lake is not thick enough. The event was scheduled to run Saturday.
The BC Department of Parks and Recreation measured 8 inches of ice and determined Whitney Point Lake unsafe. As a result, the derby has been canceled for the fifth time in the last 10 years. The derby had been canceled five times in its first 30 years.
The 2014 Crappie Derby is scheduled for Jan. 25.
