Delhi boys top Walton in consi

Staff Report

Dalton Kaminsky scored a game-high 23 points Thursday, but the Walton boys basketball team fell, 51-44, to visiting Delhi in the consolation game of the Midstate Athletic Conference 5-8 Tournament.

Ben Denison’s 15 points paced the Bulldogs, who padded a 32-26 halftime lead with a 12-3 advantage in the third quarter.

“We shot very poorly in the third quarter,” said Walton coach Gary Williams, whose team went 1-for-7 from the floor in the period. “I thought we got real stagnant offensively and didn’t move the ball.”

Brian Hannigan contributed nine points for the Bulldogs, who were seeded eighth in the MAC tournament for teams that finished the regular season in places 5-8.

Kaminsky grabbed seven rebounds and Colin Adam had 10 points for sixth-seeded Walton, which ended its season at 5-13.

Although the Warriors won’t compete in the Section Four Class C Tournament, Delhi drew the 13th seed and will play a first-round game at No. 3 Elmira Notre Dame at 7 p.m. Wednesday.

Sidney and Unatego will play for the MAC championship at 4 p.m. Saturday at Oneonta State. The Warriors and the Spartans finished 1-2, respectively, in the regular-season MAC standings.

WRESTLING

State wild-cards

Section Four wrestling coordinator Rick Armstrong said via email Thursday that the wild-card selections for the Feb. 22-23 state championships at the Times Union Center in Albany should be released sometime today.

Armstrong said the Long Island area completed its sectional tournaments Wednesday, leading to the delay. The weekend snowstorm forced some sections to move their state qualifiers to later in the week.

Five area wrestlers won sectional titles Saturday to earn automatic berths to the Division II state tournament. Mikey Boyle of Cooperstown won the Section Three title at 120 pounds. Area Section Four champions were Bainbridge-Guilford/Afton’s Chris Cirigliano (106 pounds) and Mark Viviano (195); Walton’s Dylan Wood (113); and Unatego’s Ryan Marszal (182).
