Morgan Bullis picked a good night to have a big game.
Sophomore forward Bullis finished with 22 points and 19 rebounds Tuesday, leading Bainbridge-Guilford to a 51-40 girls basketball upset of host Groton in the opening round of the Section Four Class C Tournament.
“This is a big win for this group,” said B-G coach Bob Conway, whose 10th-seeded Bobcats have three sophomore starters. “It’s great to get a sectional win.”
Bullis scored 11 points in the third quarter, when B-G (11-8) outscored the seventh-seeded Indians, 23-9. Taylor Palmatier hit back-to-back three-pointers early in the third quarter, which the Bobcats entered with an 18-15 lead.
Palmatier finished with 10 points and Abbey Smith contributed 15 for Midstate Athletic Conference-affiliate B-G, which will visit second-seeded Elmira Notre Dame (14-3) of the Interscholastic Athletic Conference for a quarterfinal at 7 p.m. Friday. The Crusaders had an opening-round bye.
Kylene Hall’s 11 points paced the Indians, who ended their season with a 12-5 record.
Unatego 46, Moravia 21
Marissa Woodard scored a game-high 13 points and fellow post player Cassidy Newman contributed eight as host Unatego won a first-round game in the Section Four Class C Tournament.
“They played an integral part,” Unatego coach Greg Bonczkowski said of Woodard and Newman. “Moravia pressed the whole game and our guards were finding post players. We weren’t forcing things and we were being patient on offense. Our guards were finding the kids inside when they cut.”
Sarah Mannina and Casey Manzanero scored nine and eight points, respectively, for the fifth-seeded Spartans (15-4) of the MAC, who will travel to fourth-seeded Tioga of the IAC on Friday. The Tigers advanced with a 65-40 win over 12th-seeded Elmira Heights, which also plays in the IAC.
Notes: Third-seeded Unadilla Valley (15-1) will host a Class C sectional quarterfinal against Midstate Athletic Conference foe Harpursville (15-3) at 7 p.m. Friday. The sixth-seeded Hornets opened with a 79-35 rout of IAC-affiliate Watkins Glen, the 11th seed, on Tuesday. UV is the reigning Midstate Athletic Conference champion. … Once-beaten Oneonta High will host a Section Four Class B semifinal against undefeated Waverly at 7 p.m. Friday. The Southern Tier Athletic Conference champion Yellowjackets (17-1), who have won five straight sectional titles, had a quarterfinal bye Tuesday. Interscholastic Athletic Conference champion Waverly, the fourth seed, improved to 19-0 Tuesday with a 52-38 defeat of No. 5 seed Chenango Valley of the STAC. … The other Section Four Class B semifinal pits STAC foes Norwich (11-5) against Seton Catholic Central (13-4). Third-seeded Norwich downed STAC rival Chenango Forks, the sixth seed, 55-37, on Tuesday. The second-seeded Saints thumped seventh-seeded Whitney Point of the IAC, 64-34.
