Local boy advances in PHR

Oneonta resident Mariano Hernandez III advanced to the New York Mets Team Championship portion of the MLB Pitch, Hit & Run Competition after earning the highest overall total during sectional competition May 19 at Damaschke Field in Oneonta.

Mariano finished the sectional event with 1,022 points to win the gold medal in the 11-12 age-group. His performance marked the best of the sectional competition, which drew local champions from the Southern Tier.

Mariano will compete in the New York Mets Team Championship on June 16 at Citi Field. The Team Championship will run from 7:45-9:15 a.m. at the home of the New York Mets, who will play the Chicago Cubs at 1:10 p.m. that day.

Mariano will compete against two other boys for the 11-12 title. Each division winner will be honored on Citi Field in a pre-game ceremony and advance to the National Finals, which will take place during All-Star Weekend back at Citi Field.

Hartwick has Scholar All-American

Hartwick College graduate Harry Hughes made the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association's 2013 Scholar All-America Team, the Hawks announced earlier this week.

Hughes is one of 98 Division I, II and III athletes to receive the honor. A total of 49 D-III athletes from 202 USILA member institutions received the distinction.

Hughes is the first Hawk to receive the honor since defender Kevin Miller in 2010.

An attackman, Hughes made the Empire 8 Conference's Second Team this past season after leading Hartwick in goals (45) and points (57). He ranked 13th in the nation in goals per game (3.21) and was 46th in points per game (4.0). Within the Empire 8, he ranked third in goals and sixth in points.

Hughes finished as the program’s all-time leading goal scorer with 185. The sociology major finished the spring semester with a 3.5 grade-point average.
