Suderley named to All-America team

Staff Report

Hartwick College senior Jared Suderley has been named to the All-America First Team in the 2013 Sporting News College Basketball Annual Magazine, which came out earlier this week.

Suderley was one of five players on the First Team. He is joined by Landon Gamble of North Central (Ill.), Michael Mayer of Williams (Mass.), Kyle Schleigh of Texas-Dallas, and Aaron Toomey from defending national champion Amherst College.

Suderley earned his second straight preseason All-American honor as he was named to the team last year. Suderley was an Empire 8 Conference Second-Team selection in 2012-13 as he led the Hawks in scoring for the third straight season and was the top scorer in the E8.

Hartwick opens Saturday

Mark Carr will open his 12th season as the head football coach at Hartwick at 1 p.m. Saturday, when the Hawks host Husson University at Wright Stadium.

“We want to win the Empire 8,” said Carr, whose team went 3-7 last season. “Our approach is to take it one game at a time and right now the focus is on Husson this weekend.”

The Eagles were 2-8 in 2012.

Carr will give sophomore John Garcia his first college start at quarterback Saturday. Garcia will be backed up by junior Andrew Bashford and senior Keegan Corbett this season.

Senior tailback Kurtis Ahart returns for the Hawks after leading the team in rushing with 434 yards last season. Other running backs are junior Ryan Manning, senior Nick Knauer (243 yards last season) and starting fullback Joe Boccia.

Sophomore Tanner Williams led the Hawks in receptions (39), yards (805), and touchdowns (7) en route to E8 Second Team honors last season, when fellow receiver Frankie Molina made 23 catches for 430 yards and five TDs. Both return this year for the Hawks, who also will bring back sophomore Marty Cole (Delhi) at left guard.
