Hartwick men win second of season

Nick Hills opened the scoring early in the second half, leading the Hartwick College men’s soccer team to a 3-1 non-conference defeat of UMass-Lowell for its second victory of the season.

Will Broomfield and Jamie O’Grady also scored for the Hawks (2-5-2), who finished with advantages of 18-7 in shots and 8-5 in corner kicks.

Following a scoreless first half in which Hartwick outshot UMass-Lowell, 9-3, Hills gave Hartwick the lead 4 minutes, 24 seconds into the second half on a double-assist from Marc Russell and Broomfield.

Chris Walter set up Broomfield for Hartwick’s second goal, which came in the 68th minute.

UMass-Lowell (2-8) cut its deficit in half when Eric DeSantis scored in the 83rd minute on a double-assist from Alex Sindoni and Kyle Garvan.

Jamie O’Grady all but ended it with 31 seconds remaining, beating losing goalie Chris Maierle with an 18-yard direct kick for the final margin.

Mateo Munarriz made two saves for the Hawks, who open their Mid-American Conference schedule Saturday night at the University of Akron.

MCLA 5, Cobleskill 0

Goalie Shawn Willis scored 4:09 into the match for Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts (3-5), which cruised to a non-conference road victory.

Willis, who made seven saves for the shutout, opened the scoring with a punt that took a long bounce and found the Cobleskill net.

The Fighting Tigers (0-9) visit SUNYIT for a North Eastern Athletic Conference match at 1 p.m. Saturday.


Delhi 6, Herkimer 3

Sarah Angerer and Allie Distin highlighted SUNY Delhi’s home victory with an 8-2 defeat of Karen Kanno and Stacy Loudes at first doubles.

Angerer and Distin moved to 7-3 on the season for the Broncos, who won three matches via forfeit.

Delhi hosts Nassau Community College on Saturday.


Delhi 3, TCCC 0

Karissa Morey amassed 23 assists to lead host SUNY Delhi to a Division III Region III victory over Tompkins Cortland Community College.

Raven Worthing contributed 13 digs, four kills and four aces in the 25-8, 25-11, 25-21 sweep for the Broncos, who received eight kills and nine digs from Hailie Chandler.

Casey Haughney had six aces and four kills for Delhi (8-9, 5-6 Region III), who will play Jamestown, Erie and Niagara County in a Region III POD on Saturday at TC3.


Hartwick College

Hartwick selected women’s soccer player Mary Morrison and volleyball player Dana Martin as its Hawks of the Week on Tuesday.

Morrison scored her first college goal and anchored the Hawks’ defense last week, when Hartwick tied Elmira, 2-2, and fell, 2-1, to Nazareth. Morrison scored four minutes into the latter game.

Martin had nine kills, six aces and six digs in a 25-17, 25-18, 18-25, 25-15 volleyball victory over Morrisville on Thursday.

Oneonta State

The SUNY Athletic Conference picked Oneonta State’s Mike Didas and Alyssa Drapeau as its men’s and women’s cross country Runners of the Week, the Red Dragons announced Tuesday.

Didas paced Oneonta’s men during the Purple Valley Classic hosted by Williams College by placing 17th out of 151 runners with an 8-kilometer time of 27:06.

Drapeau topped the scoring for Oneonta’s women, covering the 6K course in 23:52 to place 33rd out of 159 runners.

Both Oneonta programs finished sixth in the team standings.

The Red Dragons will host the Airfield Invitational at Fortin Park on Oct. 12.
