Fast start paces Yellowjackets

The Daily Star

Goals by Mariah Ruff and Taylor Hitchcock in the first seven minutes sparked host Oneonta High to a 5-0 Southern Tier Athletic Conference girls soccer victory over Chenango Valley on Wednesday.

The win marked the third in as many days for the Yellowjackets (9-0-1, 9-0-1), who beat Johnson City, 8-1, on Monday and Windsor, 7-1, on Tuesday.

Ruff opened the scoring three minutes into play. She scored inside the left post from 16 yards after receiving a throughball from Taryn More. Four minutes later, Ruff assisted Taylor Hitchcock, who scored from 12 yards.

Nicole Harmer and Alicia Arcidiacono also scored before halftime, giving OHS a 4-0 lead.

Ruff, More and Hitchcock finished with a goal and an assist apiece for the Yellowjackets, who advanced to the Class B state final last season and are ranked fifth in the state in Class B this season.

“Polls are meaningless in my opinion,” said OHS coach Jerry Mackey, whose team outshot the Warriors, 26-2. “This isn’t college football.”

The Yellowjackets will travel to play Chenango Valley again Tuesday.

Morris 2, Franklin 0

In a rematch of last season’s Section Four Class D final, visiting Morris received goals from Alexis Forgit and Haley Wist en route to a Tri-Valley League victory.

“We didn’t match their intensity,” said Franklin coach J.J. Laing, whose team tied Morris, 1-1, in last season’s sectional final and advanced to the state playoffs by winning a shootout.

Forgit scored the game’s first goal. She shot to the far post from 15 yards after getting a pass from Morgan Flint with 9:51 left in the opening half.

Wist made it 2-0 with 18:07 left in regulation. She scored from 18 yards.

Marisa Cawley and Jordan Beers made three saves apiece for the Purple Devils (7-3, 7-3), who were outshot, 9-8.

Kaylyn Oliver stopped all seven shots she faced for Morris.

Franklin will travel to Delaware League power South Kortright on Friday.

Milford 4, Worcester 0

Addy Lawson scored three goals as visiting Milford cruised to a Tri-Valley League victory.

“Speed kills,” Worcester coach Jim Kenyon said of Milford. “With (Emilie) Mertz, Lawson and (Hannah) Saggese, they put so much pressure on our backs. We mishit so many balls, but it’s the result of their speed and always being in your face.”

Lawson scored on rebound with 27:42 left in the first half to make it 1-0. Her second goal came three minutes into the second half and Kenyon said it appeared to be a mishit. A shot from the left side hit off the side of Lawson’s foot, but popped over the defense and settled inside the far post.

Lawson also scored on a breakaway before Mertz capped the scoring.

Kerrin O’Shaughnessy had nine saves for Worcester (3-6-2, 2-5-2), which will play at Richfield Springs on Friday.

Edmeston 2, G-MU 0

Both of Danielle Ruffles’ goals came on rebounds as host Edmeston earned a Tri-Valley League win.

Ruffles opened the scoring 12 minutes into play. Kelsey Bressett took an initial shot that was saved by Katie Schultes (11), but Ruffles was there to kick in the rebound.

Early in the second half, Ruffles took a shot from the top of the penalty box. Schultes deflected it, but Ruffles followed the shot and scored on the rebound.

Edmeston (2-8, 2-7) will travel to Laurens today.

• Cassidy Graham scored Bainbridge-Guilford’s second goal in the Bobcats’ 2-0 Midstate Athletic Conference victory at Unadilla Valley on Tuesday. Graham was not credited with the goal because of incorrect information reported to The Daily Star.

• Oneonta High’s Rachael Brown scored a goal in the Yellowjackets’ 7-1 Southern Tier Athletic Conference victory at Windsor on Tuesday. Brown’s first name was misspelled because it appears wrong on OHS’ roster.
