Nicole Welcome scored three goals Tuesday, leading the SUNY Delhi women’s soccer team to a 4-1 victory over visiting Tompkins Cortland Community College in a Region III B Tournament semifinal.
“She’s been doing that for two years,” Delhi coach Bob Leary said of Welcome, who has 65 points during that time frame. “She didn’t make all-Mountain Valley Conference this season, which is a farce. Her fifth game-winner of the season came today.”
Welcome scored twice against the Panthers (10-5-1) in the opening half, which ended with the Broncos (9-5) ahead, 3-0. Paris Mateo also scored in the first half. Mateo, Tylin Klinker and Megan Moody each had an assist.
Lauren Renaud made 10 saves for second-seeded Delhi, which will play for the Region III B title against Genesee CC at 3:30 p.m. Saturday back at Tompkins Cortland CC.
Top-seeded Genesee (13-3-1) advanced to the title game with a 2-1 semifinal defeat of Hudson Valley CC on Tuesday.
Region III mixed its pairings this season and will have A and B champions. Each will qualify for the NJCAA Division III Tournament, which begins Nov. 7.
Ithaca 1, O-State 0
Oneonta State gave up a breakaway goal in the 54th minute as visiting Ithaca earned a non-conference victory at Red Dragon Field.
The Bombers (13-1), who are ranked fifth among NCAA Division III teams, got a break when Ellyn Grant-Keane tracked down a loose ball at Ithaca’s 18-yard line following an O-State corner kick. Grant-Keane played the ball forward to Meredith Jones, whose 1-on-1 against Oneonta goalie Kelley Murphy started at midfield as no defenders were back. Jones beat Murphy, who replaced injured starter Rori Stark in the first half, 8:07 into the second half.
Beth Coppolecchia stopped nine shots for the Bombers, who were outshot, 13-11.
Stark made two saves and Murphy had three for Oneonta, which hosts Buffalo State at 3 p.m. Friday.
