Surging Unatego ousts Sidney, 4-1

Torri Halaquist scored two goals in the first half to lead third-seeded Unatego to a 4-1 Section Four Class C quarterfinal girls soccer victory over visiting Sidney on Thursday.

Two Cassidy Newman corner kicks set up Halaquist’s first-half goals.

The first came nine minutes into play, one that Halaquist kicked into the goal. Twelve minutes later, Halaquist headed in a Newman corner kick at the back post to make it 2-0.

“Two beautiful corners,” Unatego coach Sue Herodes said. “We were feeling good.”

Tanner Reed headed the ball into the left corner off an assist by Halaquist, 6:30 into the second half as the Spartans took a 3-0 lead.

Reed scored again after intercepting a Jolene Krom goal kick, and shot to the right-center part of the goal with 22:58 left to go in the second half to make it a four-goal cushion.

Sidney’s Katie Kirk scored from 12 yards with 19 minutes left to cap the scoring. Mackensie Gravelin assisted Kirk’s goal. Krom had 13 saves for Sidney (9-6), which lost three times to Unatego this season.

Midstate Athletic Conference champion Unatego (15-2) has won 14 straight games. The Spartans, the defending Section Four Class C champions, will play the winner of seventh-seeded Greene and No. 2 Elmira Notre Dame, in a semifinal Tuesday. Greene and END play today.

If Greene wins, Unatego would host the semifinal. The Spartans would travel to END (12-1-3) if the Crusanders win today.

“That would be nice,” Herodes said of hosting the semifinal.

Tully 4, Cooperstown 0

Olivia Ganley scored two goals to lead third-seeded Tully to a Section Three Class C-1 quarterfinal win at home.

Madison Lyon opened the scoring seven minutes into play off an assist from Ganley, who made it 2-0 with an unassisted goal 2:30 before halftime.

Jenna Donald and Ganley scored second-half goals.
