Tournament MVP Nicole Welcome scored two goals Saturday, including the winner with 4 minutes, 18 seconds left in overtime, to rally SUNY Delhi to a 3-2 victory over Genesee Community College in the NJCAA Division III Region III women’s soccer championship game.
Welcome headed the winning goal inside the far post from 6 yards out, giving an assist to Amanda Petfield.
Tylan Klinker scored off a corner kick from Petfield with 7:12 left in regulation to tie the score at 2.
Welcome also scored from 2 yards off another corner kick by Petfield, pulling the Broncos to 2-1 with 9:38 remaining in regulation.
Genesee took a 1-0 lead on an unassisted, 12-yard goal by Dana Hansen 1:19 into the match. Kaitlyn Bowers followed with an unassisted 8-yarder for a 2-0 Genesee lead with 22:06 to go in the second half.
“We didn’t get frustrated,” said Delhi coach Bob Leary, whose team won despite getting outshot, 14-6. “There is a lot of character on this team.”
Petfield and goalie Lauren Renaud (12 saves) earned All-Tournament Team honors for Delhi (10-5), which will play a first-round game in the NJCAA Division III Tournament against Brookdale CC (15-1) at 5:30 p.m. Nov. 7 at at Tompkins Cortland CC. Brookdale is the top-ranked NJCAA D-III team in the country.
O-State 5, Fredonia 2
The host Red Dragons took a 3-0 lead into halftime and clinched the SUNY Athletic Conference regular-season title.
O-State (9-4-3, 6-0-3) opened the scoring in the 17th minute. Liz Lasota played the ball down the right side to Karly DeSimone, who beat two defenders before sliding a pass that set up Shane Ventresca’s first goal of the season.
DeSimone also assisted the Red Dragons’ second goal, a header by Elise Moinzadeh.
After O-State goalie Kelley Murphy stopped a penalty kick, DeSimone stole the ball before scoring on a high shot to give O-State a three-goal cushion.
