UV falls to Deposit in volleyball

Staff Report

Shelby Pettersen’s 17-point service run Monday lifted Deposit to a 3-1 volleyball victory over visiting Unadilla Valley in the opening round of the Section Four Class D Tournament.

“She was on fire,” Deposit coach Dana Campo said of Pettersen, whose string included 12 of her match-high 21 aces and gave the Lumberjacks a 17-1 lead in the decisive fourth game. “It was crazy. They got the first point, then Shelby served the next 17 points. She was really pinpoint with her serves.”

Pettersen finished with 30 service points for eighth-seeded Deposit (12-7), which rallied from a 25-23 loss in the first game with victories of 25-19, 25-14 and 25-4.

Catherine Bush contributed six aces for the Lumberjacks, who advanced to a sectional quarterfinal at top-seeded Tioga (15-1) at 6 p.m. today. The Tigers had a first-round bye Monday.

Haley Benson’s eight aces and three kills paced ninth-seeded Unadilla Valley (9-8), which received five assists from Shannon McIntyre.

Today’s other quarterfinals include No. 5 Southern Cayuga (9-5) at No. 4 Sidney (13-3) and seventh-seeded Spencer-Van Etten (9-8) at No. 2 Harpursville (16-0) at 6 p.m. S-VE advanced with a 3-0 home sweep of No. 10 Walton on Monday. SC and Sidney had byes.

Third-seeded Bainbridge-Guilford will host No. 11 Hancock (8-8) or No. 6 Candor (9-8) at 5 p.m. today in the quarterfinals. B-G had a bye Monday, when Hancock visited Candor. No information was available on the Hancock-Candor match at press time.
