Apparently, a PONY League championship wasn’t enough for the Oneonta Hurricanes this season.

David Wessells scored the winning run on Zak Green’s walkoff single Saturday as the 15U Hurricanes nipped the 14U Edge Binghamton Mets, 2-1, in the Teener League International championship baseball game at Union-Endicott.

Wessells singled to left field to lead off the bottom of the seventh and advanced to third when Brandon Bessett singled. Bessett then stole second uncontested with Green at the plate. Green worked the count to 2-2 before blooping a single into left field, driving in Wessells for the victory.

The teams played scoreless ball until Oneonta went ahead, 1-0, in the sixth.

Following a 1-2-3 inning by reliever Bennett Eggler, who took over for starting pitcher Green in the top of the sixth, Oneonta got a one-out triple from Dalton Carver to spark a rally. Carver drove the first pitch of his at-bat to right-center field and scored when the relay throw was misplayed.

The Edge answered in the top of the seventh, loading the bases against Eggler with none out to set up Logan Neira for an RBI single between shortstop and third base that reloaded the bases.

Eggler escaped further damage thanks, in part, to a head’s up play by third baseman Devon Sobers. George Pappas sent a hard grounder to Sobers, who stepped on third for a forceout and threw home. Catcher Carver completed the double play by tagging out Robert Rea at the plate.

Eggler got the next batter to ground out to end the threat.

Green struck out seven walked three and gave up three of the Edge’s five hits in five innings. His winning single was one of seven hits for the Otsenango PONY League champion Hurricanes, who got three hits from Bessett and a single from Keaton Mark.

Losing pitcher Brian Hicklin also gave up three hits, striking out eight and walking none in 5 2/3 innings. Neira had two hits to pace Binghamton.

Oneonta, which won its first Teener title, went 9-1 in the Tri-County Teener League this season.
