David Wright pitched six sharp innings and Josh Garufi had a pair of hits to lead Oneonta’s Legion baseball team to a 7-2 District 6 victory over Oxford/Norwich on Wednesday at Norwich High.
Wright struck out eight, walked none and allowed three hits.
“He hasn’t pitched in over a year,” Oneonta coach Mike Jester said of Wright, a member of Oneonta High’s 2012 Class B state championship team. “As the game went on, he got sharper. He had more velocity on his fastball and his curveball got sharper.”
Wright retired the last 11 batters he faced. The two first-inning runs he allowed were unearned.
Oneonta scored five times in the first inning, highlighted by Garufi’s two-run double to right-center. Garufi’s double made it 4-0 and scored the inning’s final run on the back end of a double-steal.
Garufi had two hits, two runs, two RBIs and stole two bases.
Ben Moxley tripled to center and scored on a single by Wright to make it 6-2 in the second inning.
Oneonta (3-1, 1-0) will play Horseheads at 8 p.m. Friday in a first-round game of the Randy Naylor Wood Bat Classic at Bath.
