Four Cooperstown pitchers scattered 10 hits to lead the Hawkeyes to a 5-1 victory over the Utica Brewers in the Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League opener for both teams Wednesday at Doubleday Field.
Winning pitcher Eann Cox allowed one run on six hits over five innings. He struck out five and walked. Luke Mould followed with two scoreless innings, and Anthony Naso and Colton Kibler each pitched a scoreless inning for the Hawkeyes.
Cooperstown took a 2-0 lead in the fourth inning, when Cameron Day hit an RBI double and Nolan Ray contributed a sacrifice fly. Utica made two of its four errors in that inning.
After Utica scored once in the fifth, Cooperstown answered with unearned runs in the fifth and sixth innings to take a 4-1 lead.
Joshua Wyant had an RBI groundout in the eighth inning to cap the scoring.
Nate Lotze had two of Cooperstown’s seven hits.
Cooperstown will travel to play the Adirondack Trail Blazers at 7 tonight.
