OHS girls dominate with defense

Staff Report

Oneonta High had three double-digit scorers during Wednesday’s 62-23 girls basketball victory over visiting Chenango Forks.

So, of course, OHS coach Matt Miller highlighted his team’s defense in the Southern Tier Athletic Conference game.

“I’m most happy with the way we played defense,” said Miller, who received a pair of 14-point outings from Mariah Ruff and Natalie Vanderlaan-Meyering, along with a season-high 13 points from Minnie Webster.

“One of our goals tonight was to keep people out of the middle defensively, and we did a great job,” Miller continued. “They settled for a ton of jumpshots tonight, so it worked out well for us. We also wanted to do just what we were trying to keep them from doing, which was penetrate the paint, and we did.”

Point guard Ruff contributed seven steals and five assists for the defending Section Four Class B champion Yellowjackets (5-0, 4-0), who got 10 rebounds apiece from center Vanderlaan-Meyering and forward Kelsey Baker.

Miller seemed particularly pleased with Webster’s performance, though, as the senior guard continues to battle injuries.

“Honestly, she’s playing at about 50 percent right now,” he said. She has shin splints and back problems, but if we can get her healthy, this kid right now is our best kept secret for sure. She’s playing in a lot of pain even now, but she really gives us another legit scoring threat.”

Megan Plahanski scored a team-best 10 points for Chenango Forks, which trailed, 35-13, at halftime. The Blue Devils finished with seven field goals, five of which came from three-point range.

Oneonta visits Section One’s Pearl River on Saturday for a non-conference game. Miller said Pearl River, which is undefeated, reached the Class A state semifinals last season.

OHS, which has won five straight Section Four championships, is coming off a 17-5 season that ended with a 47-39 loss to Section Three’s South Jefferson in a Class B state quarterfinal.
