DeRUYTER — Janet Helena Herlihy Smith, 89, of DeRuyter, passed away Tuesday, March 12, 2013, at Crouse Hospital in Syracuse. She was born on May 11, 1923, in Fabius and had resided in DeRuyter for 66 years.

Mrs. Smith was a 1940 graduate of Fabius High School and a 1941 graduate of Central City Business Institute. She was employed by The Post Standard newspaper and the Internal Revenue Office in Syracuse. After her marriage, she became the bookkeeper for the family businesses of Smith Funeral Home, Smith Ambulance Service Inc., and R.F. Smith & Son Furniture, Appliance and Floor Covering, all of which continue today.

She was a Brownie and Girl Scout leader in DeRuyter for 25 years, a 50-year member of the Woodford Burdick Post 894 American Legion Auxiliary and 59-year member of the DeRuyter Fire Department Auxiliary. For 40 years, she bowled at the Masonic Lanes.

Janet spent every summer at her camp on DeRuyter Lake.

Surviving are her daughter, JoAnne Smith Tyler of Cooperstown; sons, Richard and his wife, Janet and Donald and his wife, Terry Ann of DeRuyter; grandsons, Russell and Daniel Smith; granddaughters, Laureen Wood and her husband, William Kopitke of West Roxbury, Mass., Julie Minerva of Westchester and Karen Hocker and her husband, Thomas of Boston, Mass.; great- grandchildren, Isabelle and Daniel Minerva, Ryan and Declan Hocker and Liam and Lillian Helena Kopitke; her sister, Mary Brennan of Fabius; and many nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her husband of 56 years, Wells Russell Smith, in 2003.

Services will be at 11 a.m., Monday, March 18, at St. Lawrence Church, DeRuyter. Burial will be in Hillcrest Cemetery, DeRuyter. Calling hours will be Sunday, March 17, from 1 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at Smith Funeral Home, DeRuyter.
