DADE CITY, Fla. — Edwin J. Deleski, 92, of Dade City, Fla., and formerly of Oneonta, passed away on Wednesday, Oct. 10, 2012.

Ed was born on March 6, 1920, in Wilkes-Barre, Pa., the son of the late Benjamin and Sarah (Luzenski) Deleski. He married Sara Joann Wenner on April 4, 1942. She predeceased him on March 31, 1991.

He graduated from Bloomsburg State College in 1942. He served his country during WWII as a fist lieutenant in the Army Air Corps where he trained fighter pilots in South Carolina and Arkansas before going overseas. He piloted cargo planes in the South Pacific until the end of the war, having more than 2,500 hours of flying.

Ed began his teaching career in Clayton, N.J. He also taught at the Laurens Central School, the Delhi Ag & Tech, and the Oneonta High School, until his retirement. He ran the Laurens summer school program for several years.

He refereed high school basketball for more than 30 years, umpired high school baseball and town team for over 30 years. He taught many children to swim at the Gilbert Lake State Park.

He also worked at the A&P grocery store on Dietz Street on Thursday nights and all day Saturdays and the Coca-Cola at the corner of Market and Main streets in Oneonta.

Ed is survived by his children, Edwin J. Deleski Jr. and his wife, Patricia, of South New Berlin, Dianne Deleski of Ridge Manor, Fla., Deborah Leach and her husband, Mark, of Wells Bridge, and Michael Deleski and his wife, Holly, of Laurens.

He is also survived by his grandchildren, Matthew, Jason, Jeremy, Ronald, Darcy, Brooks, Angela, Amy, Gina and Robin; 17 great-grandchildren and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by his parents, his wife, Sara Joann Deleski, his son, Jeffrey Deleski, and his grandson, Nicholas Deleski.
