ONEONTA — Gary Lee Shove Sr., 68, “Stogie,” “Cookie Man,” of Oneonta, passed away Tuesday, June 25, 2013, at the A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, Oneonta, surrounded by his family and friends.

He was born July 1, 1944, in Cooperstown, the son of the late Edward and Clara (Nabinger) Shove.

For many years, Gary was a trackman for the D&H Railroad in Oneonta. After his retirement he took to mowing lawns, a job that he thoroughly enjoyed doing.

On June 19, 2011, Gary married Linda Clapper at Fortin Park, Oneonta.

Gary enjoyed hunting, being outdoors, model railroading and making people laugh. He always had a joke and even if it wasn’t that funny the way he delivered it, you couldn’t help but laugh. But most of all, he loved spending time with his family especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He was a lifetime member of the NRA and a past member of the Laurens Fire Department.

Gary is survived by his wife, Linda Clapper-Shove, Oneonta; three daughters, Kathy (Eric) Moss, Monticello, Lizabeth Rose, Oneonta and Susan (David) Phillippe, Oneonta; one son, Gary Lee (Cheryl) Shove Jr., Hartwick; one stepdaughter, Nanette Gray (Erica Grant), Oneonta; one stepson, William Rood Jr. (Sandy Frank), Oneonta; 12 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; three sisters, Alice Sewade, New Hampshire, Jean Locke, Connecticut and Karen Clapper, Cooperstown; best friends, Russell Simonds, Otego and Bill Davies, Oneonta; as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was predeceased by one brother, Elton Shove.

Calling hours will be from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday, June 29, 2013, in the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta.
