EAST BRANCH — Betty Jean Vernold, née Charles, died peacefully Tuesday, May 14, 2013, at her home in East Branch. She was 86.

Betty was born in Reedburn, to Kenneth and Lena Charles, on May 8, 1927, and attended school in Hancock.

She was married to William McKinley Vernold, of East Branch, after his return from the Burmese theater of World War II. Bill and Betty had three sons, Jerry, Jack and Michael. Bill and Betty often spent their winters with their sons in Largo, Florida, after purchasing a home there in 1964.

In addition to her family life, Betty worked full time for many years at the BD Bard-Parker facility in Hancock before her retirement.

Betty will be remembered foremost as a kind and caring mother and grandmother. She was an outstanding cook who made holiday dinners for her extended family for many years, and later became a skilled needleworker who knitted handmade projects for friends and family.

Betty was also known as a sharp, witty and level-headed woman. She was a fan of the New York Mets and Jeff Gordon of NASCAR, but never took sides when her sons Jack and Jerry were rooting for the Giants and Cowboys respectively.

Betty was predeceased by her husband and six siblings. She is survived by two siblings, Don and Francis; her three sons Jerry, Jack and Michael; and four grandsons, Tim, Bill, Josh, and Justin.

A graveside memorial service will be held Saturday at 1 p.m. at the cemetery next to the East Branch Methodist Church.
