NEW BERLIN — Gordon “Gordie” LeGrand Schrag, 71, New Berlin, died Sunday, Feb. 16, 2014, at the Southeast Volusia Hospice Care Center, Edgewater, Fla.
Mr. Schrag was born Nov. 29, 1942, in Leonardsville, to the late George and Leora Schrag.
A 1960 graduate of Leonardsville Central School, he retired in New Berlin in 1998, after 32 years with the state Department of Transportation.
A winter resident of New Smyrna Beach, Fla., since 2005, he was an honorary member of the New Berlin Fire Department and EMS. He coached youth sports, helped with the Boy Scouts and was voted New Berlin Citizen of the Year in 2005.
He leaves his wife of 48 years, Sharon Beadle Schrag; two sons, Wade (Patti) and Brett (Renee); six granddaughters, Keana, Sierra, Jaiden and Natalya, all of New Berlin, Rachael of Norwich and Crystal of Edmeston; sister, Janet (Raymond) Washburn of West Winfield; several nephews; nieces; brothers-in-law; sisters-in-law; cousins; uncle, LeGrand “Bill” Sweet of the Veterans Home at Oxford; and special cousin, Ida Mae (Tony) Tophoven.
Gordie’s biggest enjoyment was family. He loved gatherings with family and friends. He also enjoyed attending flea markets and auctions, was a big collector and loved getting a bargain.
He still found enjoyment reminiscing about the town softball team, where he played shortstop after graduating from high school.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the New Berlin Fire Department or Halifax Health Hospice of Volusia/Flagler, Southeast Care Center, 4140 S. Ridgewood Ave., Edgewater, FL 32141.
Memorial services will be this May in New Berlin.
