BURLINGTON FLATS — June Marie Carey, 82, of Burlington Flats, died peacefully Friday, Dec. 20, 2013, at the Eastern Star Nursing Home in Oriskany.

She was born Oct. 19, 1931, at home in Exeter, the daughter of Howard E. and Myrtle (Joslyn) Smith.

She married Stanley Melrose Carey on June 15, 1952, at the Hartwick United Methodist Church. He predeceased June on Dec. 10, 1975.

June was employed and served as an officer with the Otsego Mutual Fire Insurance Company from 1950 until her retirement in 2007.

She was a member of the West Exeter United Methodist Church and served as their treasurer and WSCS. June was a past Matron, officer and Electra for the Eastern Star.

For many years June would bake pies, rolls, breads and cookies to sell for Bassett Hospital. As a homemaker she was famous for her Aunt June’s Baked Beans, her gardening, and her annual crop of asparagus. She raised chickens for her roadside egg stand, and in her leisure she would enjoy crocheting.

June is survived by her children, Sharon and Del Meyers, Hannah and J.B. Harbison; her grandchildren, Andrew Meyers, Jeremy and Lara Meyers, Patrick and Nora Meyers, Brandon and Shelly Sleezer and Ashley Harbison; her great-grandchildren, Zoey Meyers, Jeremy Meyers Jr., Lauryn Shoemaker and Kali Sleezer; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Her husband, Stanley; her sister, Marguerite Lowe; and brother, Vaughn Smith predeceased June.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Dec. 27, 2013, at the West Exeter United Methodist Church with the Rev. Fred Albrecht officiating.

Calling hours will be from 4 to 6 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 26, at the Houk-Johnston-Terry Funeral Home, Edmeston.

Burial will be at the Burlington Flats Cemetery.

Contributions may be made in June’s memory to the West Exeter United Methodist Church.
