MOHAWK — Gerard J. Brown, 64, of Fulton Street, and formerly of Richfield Springs, passed away unexpectedly on Sunday afternoon, Dec. 22, 2013, in Little Falls Hospital.
He was born on Dec. 13, 1949, in Cooperstown, son of the late Karl and Mary Vertucci Brown. Gerard was a lifelong area resident. He was raised in Richfield Springs and graduated from Richfield Springs High School with the class of 1968. He furthered his education at Herkimer County Community College, where he earned his associate’s degree.
From 1985 to 1990, Mr. Brown owned and operated Brown’s Service Station. In 1990, he worked as a charter bus driver for Coach USA and in 1996, he went to work as a service technician for Mohawk Valley Oil. He retired in 1999.
Gerard had a strong faith in God and led a devoted Catholic life. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus Council No. 579, Herkimer.
He completed two years of Ministry at Albany Diocese Ministry Program.
He enjoyed teaching and had taught plumbing and heating at Fulmont State College and also retrained Beechnut employees for the State of New York.
In his leisure time he found great satisfaction in rebuilding many collector cars and being an actor, performing in many Dinner Theatre mystery plays.
To those who knew him he will be remembered as a caring, outgoing and helpful man who always had time to stop and talk to someone and listen to what they had to say. He will greatly missed by his many friends.
Surviving are one son, Gerard Brown and his companion, Kristi Parnell of Woodruff, S.C.; two daughters, Maria Brown-Moore of Spartanburg, S.C., and Robin Cronin and her companion, Andrew Shipman of Schuyler Lake; several uncles, cousins and his K9 friend, Crumpett Ann.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by a sister, Karla Snyder in 2001.
A funeral service for Mr. Brown will be at 1 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 29, in J. Seaton McGrath Funeral Home, 40 W. James St., Richfield Springs. Calling hours will follow from 2 until 4 p.m. in the funeral home.
Interment will take place in St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Richfield Springs in the spring of 2014.
