J. David Ferris
ITHACA — James David Ferris, 76, of Ithaca, passed away at Cayuga Medical Center in Ithaca on Thursday, Jan. 30, 2014, with his loving family by his side.
David was born in Otego on Dec. 5, 1937. He attended and graduated from Otego Central School in 1954.
After serving in the U.S. Army, David attended and graduated from SUNY Albany. He continued his education throughout his life, earning his PhD from Greenwich University in 1993.
David worked in the insurance industry for over 40 years. In 1979, he purchased The Wood Office insurance company in Ithaca. He was also very active in his community. He was a founding member of the Tompkins County Community Arts Partnership, served on the Board of Trustees for Tompkins Cortland Community College, as well as the Chair of the Board of Trustees for the NYS 4-H Foundation. In addition, he had served on the board for more than a dozen other community boards and foundations.
David is survived by his wife, Karen; brothers, Jerry (Lillian) and Jon (Linda); sister, Susan Patterson; his children, Kim (Rich), David, Donnie (Beth), Jamie (Melissa); stepsons, Chad and Kyle; grandchildren, Laurel (Dan), Adele, Grace, Laura and Meghan; and several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his parents, James C. Ferris and Emma (Boynton) Davenport, his brother, Paul and daughter, Katherine.
A Mass will be held at 11 a.m. on Feb. 7, at St. Catherine’s of Siena Church. A celebration of life will held at the Country Club of Ithaca immediately following the Mass.
