STAMFORD — Thomas Michael Vasta Sr., 64, passed away peacefully at his mountain-top cabin on March 19, 2014, after a courageous two-year battle with cancer. He was surrounded by his loving family.

Born Feb. 18, 1950, in Berlin, Germany, the son of Clara and the late Thomas Vasta. Tom grew up in Bellmore, married Barbara Novellano in November of 1968, and moved his family to Harpersfield in 1978, to run a dairy farm.

In 1990, Tom opened Vasta’s Italian Deli and Pizzeria with his family in Stamford and grew a successful business over the last 24 years.

Tom enjoyed spending time at his home in Florida, deep-sea fishing on his beloved 52 foot Viking boat “Buckshot,” gardening, cooking and spending time with his family.

Tom was a former member of the Stamford Fire Department, current member of the Knights of Columbus, and a parishioner of Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church.

Tom will be remembered with love by his mother, Clara Vasta; siblings, Anne (James) Baldauf, Frederick Vasta (April Gerlich Whalen), Francesca (Peter) Vasta-Falldorf; children, Dawn Dubois (Richard Weiss), Thomas (Jennifer) Vasta Jr., Frederick (Stacey) Vasta, Christina (Michael) McCann, Gabriella Vasta (Willem Joosse); grandchildren, Steven, Nicolas, Ashley, Matthew, Alexa, Isabella, Emma, Megan, Tyler, Molly, Allison; and great-grandchildren, Alivia and Liam.

He was predeceased by his fiancée, Jacqueline Davis; and father, Thomas.

Friends may call at the Hall-Tari Funeral Home, 40 Main St., Stamford from 4 to 9 p.m. Sunday, March 23, 2014.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated by the Rev. Michael G. Cambi, pastor, at Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church at 11 a.m. Monday, March 24, 2014. Interment will follow the Mass in the Sacred Heart Cemetery in Stamford.
