Helen B. Ranieri
ONEONTA — Helen B. Ranieri died March 20, 2014, at her daughter’s home where she was lovingly cared for by family and friends.
She was born on May 21, 1929, in Brooklyn, the daughter of Frank and Rachel (DeSalvo) Buoniconto. Her parents were Italian immigrants. She graduated from high school in Cairo, and from SUNY Oneonta in 1951.
Helen married Jack F. Ranieri on June 21, 1950. They were married for 41 years and lived in Oneonta. Helen taught for 20 years at Center Street School and Riverside School in Oneonta. She taught for two years in the Jersey City School District. She was past president of the Oneonta Teachers Association and the SUCO Alumni Association, serving on the board of directors for three years. She was a member of the New York State Reading Teachers Association, NYSTA and AAUW. She was a member of the Elks Lodge, Italian American Club and St Mary’s Catholic Church in Oneonta.
Survivors include five sons, one daughter, her son-in-law and daughter-in-laws. Her sons include Daniel and Jack (Loretta) of Bozeman, Mont., Michael, David (Tracey) of Oneonta and Richard of Wells Bridge. Her daughter is Denise (Terry) O’Brien of Oneonta.
She is also survived by eight grandchildren, Daniel (Simia) Ranieri, Sicily and Giacomo Ranieri, Bozeman, Mont., Rachel Ranieri, Arlington, Va., Erin (Noble Champen) O’Brien, Michelle, Maria and Austin Ranieri, Oneonta. Helen had 25 nieces and nephews.
Helen is survived by four great-grandchildren — and one on the way, Rio and Mira Ranieri of Bozeman, Mont. and Dejalei and Maecean Champen of Oneonta.
Brothers and sisters include Mary Williams, Bradenton, Fla., Dorothy Hanno, Cape Coral, Fla., Frank Buoniconto, Dunedin, Fla., and Richard (Marlene) Buoniconto, Cairo. A sister-in-law, Agatha Ludlam, Bradenton, Fla., and brothers-in-law, John (Mary) Ranieri, Marco Island, Fla., and Joseph (Pearl) Ranieri, Altamont, also survive Helen.
