CHERRY VALLEY — Mary Alice Alpaugh, 93, of Cherry Valley, passed away on Friday, March 28, 2014, at Otsego Manor.

She was born on Feb. 26, 1921, in Sharon Springs. She was the daughter of Joseph and Emma (Neibergall) McFee.

Mary graduated from Sharon Springs Central School as salutatorian in 1938, and attended Oneonta Normal School (now SUCO).

Mary married Clyde Alpaugh at the United Methodist Church in Sharon Springs on Jan. 28, 1940, and thereafter resided in Cherry Valley for the next 64 years. Together they raised their two children, sharing 49 years before Clyde’s death on Jan. 29, 1989, one day after their 49th anniversary. In 2004, she moved to Cobleskill.

Mary worked in the business office at Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown for 25 years, retiring in 1987.

She was a member of the Rebekah Lodge No. 546 in Cherry Valley since 1942. She was a Sunday school teacher at the United Methodist Church, was a member of the Cherry Valley Historical Association, a past member of the Cherry Valley Volunteer Firemen’s Auxiliary. She spent many years as an Election Inspector.

She was an avid reader, enjoyed playing cards, doing jigsaw puzzles, traveling, knitting, spending many enjoyable hours researching family genealogy and visiting cemeteries. She volunteered at the Cherry Valley Museum and Bassett Hospital.

Survivors include a son, Joseph (Linda) Alpaugh; grandsons, Matthew (Kristina) Alpaugh, Scott (Danielle) Alpaugh; and great-granddaughters, Stella, Gretta and Natalie.

She was predeceased by Clyde; a daughter, Arlene Alpaugh; and her brother, Lawrence McFee.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, April 1, 2014, at the United Methodist Church, Cherry Valley, with the Rev. Lyman Johnson officiating.

Visitation will be from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday, March 31, 2014, at the Ottman Funeral Home, Cherry Valley.

Burial will be in the Cherry Valley Cemetery at a later date.

Donations in lieu of flowers, may be made to the Cherry Valley United Methodist Church, Cherry Valley Museum or Catskill Area Hospice.

Mary’s family extends their appreciation to the medical staff of Otsego Manor and the Catskill Area Hospice staff and volunteers for their kindness and compassionate care.
