Mary S. Short
ONEONTA — Mary S. Short, 83, of Oneonta, passed away Tuesday, April 9, 2013, at Bassett Hospital, Cooperstown.
She was born Oct. 4, 1929, in Oswego, the daughter of the late Lee and Katherine (Dorsey) Springall.
Mary married Donald N. Short on March 24, 1951. Donald predeceased her on Sept. 15, 2010.
For many years, Mary was a telephone operator for AT&T Telephone and later Verizon in Oneonta until her retirement. She was also a telephone operator at Wilber National Bank.
She enjoyed spending time with her family and her faithful canine companion, Casey 2.
Mary was a member of St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church, Oneonta, the Pioneers Telephone Operators and the Martha Chapter of the Order of Eastern Star.
Mary is survived by her four children, Linda and Stephen Tracz of Roseboom, Donna and Mark Gilger of Houston, Texas, Evelyn and Ray Carhart of Cohoes and Nelson and Maureen Short of Baltimore, Md.; eight grandchildren, Christopher Perrine, Michael, Katie and Caroline Gilger, Brian Kuiper, Sarah Lambert and Eric and Barbara Short; six great-grandchildren; as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was predeceased by her brother, David Springall.
The family would like to extend a very special thank you to Joe and Donna Pidgeon, Mary’s wonderful neighbors and friends, for all of their years of dedication and willingness to help Mary and Don with all of their needs.
Calling hours will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, April 12, 2013, in the Bookhout Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oneonta. The Martha Chapter of the Order of Easter Star will conduct a service at 7:30 p.m.
Funeral services will be held at the funeral home at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 13, 2013, with the Rev. Edward L. Eastman officiating. Burial will follow in the Mount Marion Cemetery, Saugerties.
