Robert R. Slocum

NEW BERLIN — Robert R. Slocum, 79, of New Berlin and Smithtown, passed away Wednesday, Oct. 2, 2013, at his home with his loving family by his side.

He was born in Oneonta on Feb. 19, 1934, to Forrest and Helen (Becker) Slocum.

Robert graduated from Oneonta High School in 1952. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1952 to 1954, aboard the USS Correy. He received his bachelor’s degree from Oswego State. He went on to receive his master’s degree and professional administrative degree from NYU and CW Post. He started his teaching career in 1960 at Richmond Hills High School in Queens. He then began teaching at Harborfields High School in Greenlawn, L.I. in 1964 and retired in 1992.

Bob was and outdoorsman and an avid skier and golfer. His hobbies included stained glass, reading and his grandchildren.

Bob is survived by his loving wife of 17 years, Kathy (nee Kuch). He is also survived by the loves of his life, daughters, Stacey (Dan) Slocum-Smith, Somerset, N.J. and Rebecca (Armando) Rodriguez, North Bend, Wash.  He was blessed with grandchildren, Brandon, Brett and Chase Smith and Leonardo and Anabella Rodriguez. Bob also leaves behind his older brother, Arthur (Janice) Slocum of West Laurens and Frank (Jean) Slocum of Unadilla. Bob is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

Calling hours will be from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 4, at the Johnston Funeral Home in Morris.

A funeral service with Military Honors will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 5, at the Johnston Funeral Home in Morris with the Rev. Kurt Funke officiating.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Bob’s name to St. Jude Children’s Hospital 501 St Jude Place Memphis, TN 38105-1942 or Catskill Area Hospice and Palliative Care, 1 Birchwood Drive, Oneonta, NY 13820.
