Charles W. ‘Bill’ Shupperd

SIDNEY — Charles William “Bill” “Grandpa Bill” Shupperd passed away peacefully at 90 years old on Wednesday, April 2, 2014, surrounded by his family at the New York State Veterans Home in Oxford.

He was predeceased by his parents, Pearl and Frank Shupperd; and his brothers, Woodrow, Jack and Bobby.

Bill is survived by his wife of 67 years, Veronica Shupperd of Sidney; four daughters, Cathleen Shupperd of Sidney, Barbara (Doug) Williams of Victor, Joanne (Larry) Postulka of Simpsonville, S.C., and Mary (Richard) Savage of Binghamton; two sons, James (Jerri) Shupperd of Sidney and John (Ondrea Northrup) Shupperd of Sidney; nine grandchildren, Jeffrey Shupperd of Sidney, Cherie (Richard) Dragomani of Victor, Michelle (Matthew) Boyle of Macedon, Matthew (Kathryn) Postulka of Medfield, Mass., Bryan Postulka of Greenville, S.C., Petty Officer 2nd Class Andrew Postulka of MCAS New River, N.C., Timothy Shupperd of Sidney, Joseph Shupperd of Sidney and Jared Shupperd of Sidney; seven great-grandchildren, Owen and Madison Dragomani, Emma, Natalie and Caitlin Boyle and Brooke and Jaclyn Postulka.

Charles “Bill” was born in Tipton, Ind., on Feb. 3, 1924.

During World War II, he honorably served in the United States Navy. Following his honorable discharge, he was employed as a supervisor at Bendix Corporation for 34 years, retiring in 1983.

Bill’s greatest joys in his life were spending time with his family and pride in serving his community. He served on the Sidney Central School Board for 11 years, six of those years as president. Later, Bill served on the Sidney Village Board for 20 years up until age 84.

Friends are invited to call from 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday, April 6, 2014, at C.H. Landers Funeral Chapel, 21 Main St., Sidney.

A Mass of Christian burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday, April 7, 2014, at Sacred Heart Church, 15 Liberty St., Sidney with Fr. Gordon Polenz, pastor officiating. Burial with military honors will follow in Prospect Hill Cemetery, Sidney.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in Bill’s memory may be made to the NYS Veterans Home, 4207 State Highway 220, Oxford, NY 13830 or to Sidney Dollars For Scholars, Attn: Tracy Young, 42 Union St., Sidney, NY 13838. Please put “Shupperd” on the memo line of checks.
