BALTIMORE — Elvira E. Bette Kennedy, 89, passed away on Feb. 22, 2013.
Elvira E. Bette Kennedy (nee Lance), while serving as a Pharmacist’s Mate Second Class in World War II, met and married a blinded WW II veteran, the late Thomas Joseph Kennedy Jr. (founder of Dawn’s Office Supply).
She was the dear mother of Thomas J. Kennedy III and Kim M. Kennedy and his wife, Carole; dear grandmother of Katherine L. and John M. Kennedy; devoted sister of John H. Lance and his wife, Darlene Pidgeon Lance, and the late Mary Sandra Nolan. She is also survived by nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Kennedy was born and raised in Oneonta.
She joined the Navy in August of 1943, where she met and fell in love with a U.S. Marine, who had lost his sight Christmas morning 1943, at Bougainville and was recuperating in a Navy Hospital in Northern, California. They married Dec. 29, 1944.
Mrs. Kennedy cared very much for children in need. She started volunteering her time at Children’s Hospital on The Women’s Board in the late 1970s.
In 1980, she received an engraved charm for over 1,000 hours and by 1983, she had received another for over 2,000 hours. She served as president of the board from 1982 to 1984.
She lived in the Dixon Hill neighborhood of Mt. Washington from 1953 until she moved to Emeritus in October 2012.
Mrs. Kennedy was devoted to St. Thomas Aquinas Roman Catholic Church, 1008 W. 37th Street, Baltimore, MD 21211, where a funeral Mass was offered Thursday at 10 a.m. Interment in St. John’s Cemetery (Hydes, Md.)
