ONEONTA — Byron E. Sheesley Jr., 64, beloved son of the late Dr. Byron E. Sheesley Sr. and his wife, Mary Clark Sheesley, longtime residents active in the Oneonta community, passed away Feb. 22, 2013.

Byron is survived by his brothers, Joel (and Joan) Sheesley of Wheaton, Ill., Philip (and Susan) Sheesley of East Kingston, N.H., and Timothy (and Karen) Sheesley of Otego. Byron was uncle to Benjamin Sheesley, Peter J. Sheesley, John P. Sheesley, Dr. Thomas Sheesley, Peter B. Sheesley, Jocelyn R. Sheesley, Sarah M. Sheesley and Daniel B. Sheesley. Byron was also great-uncle to Sophie and Ellie, Samuel and Katherine Anne, Jack and Mia and Jane.

Early in life, Byron lived with his family in Puerto Rico and attended a Spanish-speaking school at Humaco, Puerto Rico, for two years. From his youth he was a curious and creative student. He was a graduate of Houghton College and the Bible Speaks Bible School, Massachusetts.

Byron will be remembered for his deep and abiding faith in Christ, and his desire to share his faith with others. He most enjoyed exploring the Scriptures, taking opportunities for service to the poor, working in nursing homes and supporting struggling churches at home and needy missions abroad.

He served as an assistant to his father, Dr. Byron Sheesley Sr. on a medical mission to the Gaza Strip. Byron also served on a mission project in Mexico.

Although increasingly limited by poor health, Byron became an accomplished swimmer, an excellent trombonist and acted in several high school plays.

His lifelong interests remained with his studies in the Bible and in subjects and activities that grew from his familiarity with Scripture. His faith, his love of words, his wit, and his sense of humor are remembered fondly by his family.

Funeral services will be held at Main Street Baptist Church in Oneonta, at 3 p.m. Sunday, March 10, 2013.

Interment services will be private.

Memorial donations in Byron’s name may be made to Catholic Charities, 176 Main St., Oneonta, NY 13820.
