Alta Evelyn Smith
OTEGO — Alta Evelyn Smith of Otego, peacefully passed away Wednesday, Feb. 20, 2013, at the Hospice House of Bradenton, Fla., with family by her side.
Alta was born in Conesville and moved to Otego as a baby with her parents, Evelyn and Elmer Davis. She lived in Otego for the rest of her 86 years. She graduated from Otego High School. Later, she worked as the cafeteria manager at the Otego/ Unatego School.
Alta was predeceased by her loving husband of 51 years, Ralph “Buster” Smith. She was also predeceased by her son, Jack Francis Smith; her brother, Don Davis; her sister, Isabel Scofield; and her sisters-in-law, Dorothy Davis and Maggie Southard.
She is survived by her three children and their spouses, Richard (Valerie) Smith of Gordonsville, Va., Deborah (Ron) Haggerty of Sarasota, Fla., and Patricia (Mike) D’Haem of Key Largo, Fla.; brother, Richard Davis of Center Valley, Pa.; sister, Roberta (Don) Colley of Charlottesville, Va., sister-in-law, Betty Davis of Otego; two brothers-in-law, Duane Scofield of Schenevus and Russ Southard of Oneonta; her seven loving grandchildren, Jessica (Scott) Hintz, Forrest Smith, Darren Smith, Christel (Glenn) Ewing, Ron Jr. ( Leah) Haggerty, Megan D’Haem, and Michael D’Haem; six great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
Alta was a member of the Otego United Methodist Church. She was very active in the OtegoVolunteer Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary for numerous years. She loved her village of Otego and volunteered her time to many activities including those at the Otego Library and the Historical Society.
Her biggest love was for her family and her many friends. She always had a story or an update on a family member or a friend. She welcomed people who just stopped by for a visit around the kitchen table or out on the porch. Her children extend their gratitude to all the family and friends who have so enriched her life. She will truly be missed by all.
Her family will celebrate her life at a summer service in Otego. Visitation will be July 26, at the Bookhout Funeral Home 30 River St., Otego, from 7 to 9 p.m. Funeral services will be at the Otego Methodist Church on Saturday, July 27, at 4 p.m. with the Rev. Fred Albrecht officiating. Burial will follow in the Otego Evergreen Cemetery, Otego.
