The Daily Star

---- — Lewis ‘Lukie’ R. Martindale

MILFORD — Lewis “Lukie” R. Martindale, 90, a lifelong resident of the Milford area, died Tuesday morning, Jan. 1, 2013, at A.O. Fox Nursing Home in Oneonta.

Born Oct. 18, 1922, in the Village of Milford, he was the son of Seth and Jennie (Tompkins) Martindale.

“Lukie” was a dairy farmer his entire life. He lived alone and was independent and self-reliant until only a month or so before his death. Although he drove farm vehicles, trucks, tractors, heavy machinery and cars from a young age he did not see any need to obtain his driver’s license until he was 65.

He was known for his intense curiosity; he loved to take things apart and study every kind of device or machinery to figure out how and why it worked.

He loved the land and the out-of-doors, and especially enjoyed fishing for salmon, 4-wheeling, snowmobiling, coffee at the Apple Foods Market in Milford, hunting, his beloved Allis Chalmers tractors, Western TV shows, attending the Otsego County Fair, Tractor Pulls, Farm Days, and above all, farming.

He was continually active and to his final days never declined any opportunity or invitation to try something new or different.

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his brother, Stuart Martindale; and his sisters, Thelma Domion and Dorothy March.

He is survived by many cousins, nieces and nephews; and by his good friends and neighbors, Bernie, Gary and Bonny Kaneg and Lois Roam.

Funeral services will be at noon Saturday, Jan. 5, 2013, at the Tillapaugh Funeral Home, 28 Pioneer St., Cooperstown, with the Rev. Mike Glisson, pastor of Faith Baptist Church in Hyde Park, officiating. Calling hours will be from 10 a.m. until the time of the service.

Burial in the Martindale family lot in the Milford Cemetery will take place in the spring.

In lieu of flowers, it is suggested that donations in Lewis’ name be made to Catskill Area Hospice and Palliative Care, Inc., 1 Birchwood Drive, Oneonta, NY 13820.

Arrangements are under the supervision of Tillapaugh Funeral Service, Cooperstown.
