---- — Ruth Dennis Schlafer

PINEHURST, N.C. — Ruth Dennis Schlafer, 92, of Pinehurst, N.C., formerly of Delhi, died at FirstHealth Hospice House on Dec. 23, 2012, with her family at her side. A memorial was held at Quail Haven Village, Bill Lowdermilk Building, at 3 p.m. Dec. 28.

Ruth grew up in Walton and attended Syracuse University and Albany Business College. She worked for a milling company for 15 years and then became the first female Village Clerk of Walton, a position she held from 1957 to 1972. Following the death of her parents in 1973, she married Reynold W. Schlafer, DDS, and moved to Delhi, where she assisted in his dental practice. She was a loving companion in daily life and fully embraced her new family.

Ruth was truly there for better or for worse for all. Generous in heart and action, she gave the best portion of herself to caring for others and will be remembered by family and friends for her selfless acts of kindness and love. She was often heard to say, “I was put on this earth to help others” and it was in believing and living this mission that each new encounter provided her purpose, pleasure and fulfillment. It is too little to say that she will be sorely missed by all who knew her.

She outlived her husband by eight years and is survived by his loving children, John D. Schlafer (Lily) of Wayland, Mass.; Barbara L. Schlafer of Kingston, Ontario, Canada, Daniel F. Schlafer (Jan) of Franklin; grandchildren: Michael Ho (Kim), Leigh Ng (Albert), Aarron Jackson (Emily), Jael and Cody Schlafer, and seven great-grandchildren. Also surviving are many nieces and nephews, Marilyn Olson and husband, Ron of Fairport, Dan Schlafer and wife, Josette of Fairfield Glade, Tenn., and Ginny Smallwood of Florida were especially close.

Memorial contributions may be made to The Foundation of FirstHealth, 150 Applecross Road, Pinehurst, NC 28374-9961.

The family is being assisted by the Boles Funeral Home of Southern Pines.
