TOLEDO, Ohio — Wilma Knak, 103, passed away on Jan. 11, 2013, at the Franciscan Care Center in Toledo, Ohio.
She was born on Nov. 18, 1909, in Nord Kampen, Germany, to Fredrick and Meta Ehlermann.
Among her recollections of her early life, she recalled when her father left to serve in the military in World War I. She ended her schooling at the age of 14 to help on the family farm. She rode her bicycle to attend classes in cooking, sewing and handwork and cake decorating. Wilma came to the United States at the age of 19, to bring her nephew to join his parents. She found work as a housekeeper, dining room helper and farmhand.
Wilma married Ludwig Knak on Feb. 19, 1932.
Wilma is survived by her daughter, Geraldine Knak Stiefel; grandchildren, Geri Marie Knak and Lisa Toomey.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband of 51 years, Ludwig Knak; son, James Knak; and grandson, Scott J. Stiefel.
Memorial services will be held later in East Meredith.
